This pamphlet is a good resource for what the law requires of tree companies as of April, 2017. Any company, tree, landscape, or contractor, who performs tree operations in NJ is now required BY LAW to register with the NJ Board of Tree Experts and employ a Licensed Tree Expert and/or a Licensed Tree Care Operator. Each title has a specific list of services he/she can perform under that title within their company. If a company is not registered and/or possess the correct licensed individual on their staff, it is illegal for them to be doing tree operations on trees over 6″ diameter and may be fined heavily if they are doing so.
The purpose of this law is to legitimize the tree care industry with regards to safety for our workers as well as the client. Tree work is dangerous and if the employees are not receiving the correct training, it could be dangerous. Just because a company states it is “licensed” and “insured” does not mean they have a LTE or LTCO on staff nor the appropriate insurance rider (that is for a different blog!). The NJ Board of Tree Experts has a directory of businesses registered with them as well as an LTE # or LTCO # of the employee/s on staff who are registered.
