For small trees and shrubs you can water them once or twice a week. Use a soaker hose to control runoff. The best time to water is at dusk. You can water large trees the same way but you must move the hose every hour or so to cover as much of the root zone as possible. If you have a lot of trees it becomes difficult to supplement God’s work.

Remember trees do have some of their own defense mechanisms. Losing leaves is one defense. Trees lose water vapor through their leaves. By blowing off leaf surface they decrease the moisture they waste. Proper mulching and vertical mulch are things we can do to protect our plants. Introducing microbes will help the root systems repair themselves after prolonged periods of drought.
