About this borough

Tavistock was created so members could golf on Sundays.

Tavistock Borough was incorporated in 1921 specifically to allow Tavistock Country Club members to play golf on Sundays — Haddonfield, the surrounding township, prohibited Sunday play. The borough has a population of fewer than a dozen people, almost entirely living on or adjacent to the country-club grounds.

The 0.30 sq mi footprint is dominated by the country-club golf course itself — mature specimen trees, fairway-edge oaks, water-hazard sycamores, and signature plantings around the clubhouse. Tree work here is specimen-tree care, not borough-residential work. Every tree on the course matters individually.

Compact-borough profile

A borough that is mostly a golf course.

Tree Awareness has worked specimen-tree care on country-club properties for three decades. Tavistock fits that frame.

What we do — pruning, removal, plant health, risk.

Six services shaped for small-borough conditions: tight lots, shared canopy, narrow access.

Tree Removal

Need a tree removed in Tavistock? One of the smallest municipalities in New Jersey — essentially the Tavistock Country Club and a handful of homes — the borough has heritage golf-course shade trees and mature residential oaks. Crane for tight backyard or course-edge work, ropes and rigging where it fits. Lawn and turf protected, full cleanup. Call (856) 241-0489.

Plant Health Care

Is a tree in Tavistock yellowing, dropping leaves early, or showing bark damage? We diagnose the actual problem before treating anything. Around here we commonly see Bacterial Leaf Scorch on pin oaks, Emerald Ash Borer on ash trees, and root-flare burial from over-mulching. We treat the cause. Call (856) 241-0489.

Local pressure

Three pressures specific to Tavistock's tree canopy.

Specimen-tree care on a country-club course is a different practice than residential tree work.

01

Trees worth saving

Mature fairway-edge oaks are course-design assets. Removal is a last resort — cabling, structural pruning, and root-collar work come first. TRAQ-qualified review on every specimen.

02

Drop-zone choreography

Fairways, greens, and bunkers each have different damage costs. Thinking the work through before any saw comes out is course-design-aware.

03

Fitting work to the calendar

Major work needs to fit between tournaments and member-event schedules. Most tree work is winter-dormancy.

Diagnostic checklist

When a tree has to come down — and when it doesn’t.

Tavistock is the smallest borough in New Jersey by population — the borough was incorporated in 1921 essentially around the Tavistock Country Club. Most of the trees here are part of the country club's mature landscape plantings. The arboricultural challenges are the ones any well-established country-club canopy faces: fairway-edge trees with compaction issues, mature specimen trees reaching their structural limits. Six signs Paul looks for first.

01 · Diagnostic

Vertical cracks in the trunk

Splits running up or down the main trunk indicate structural failure has begun.

02 · Diagnostic

Bark peeling in large chunks

Healthy trees shed bark slowly. Large patches falling away in a single season point to internal decline.

03 · Diagnostic

Fungus growing on the trunk or root flare

Mushroom conks at the base or running up the trunk are evidence of structural decay.

04 · Diagnostic

Significant lean toward a structure

New leans, or worsening leans — especially after a storm — mean the root plate may be compromised.

05 · Diagnostic

Lightning damage or split crown

Lightning-struck trees often show crown dieback within 12–18 months.

06 · Diagnostic

EAB canopy thinning on ash trees

If your ash tree’s upper canopy is 30%+ thinned, the tree is past treatment threshold.

Overall amazing experience with this company. Same day return phone call, next day quote, and schedule service the day after approval. What more can you ask than that, they did a great job cleaning up even with a frozen snow covered ground.

I first used Tree Awareness back in the 90’s to take out 2 overgrown trees at my property in West Deptford. Both very large, and very close to the house. I used them again about 10 years ago for the same reason at my current property. When we had a wet heavy snow a few weeks ago, a tree that hangs over my roof and still has dead leaves on it, was so weighed down it was touching the roof, and the tree itself was leaning pretty precariously Towards the house. When I saw today that we might be getting 11”-15” of heavy wet snow this weekend, I was in a panic. I called them, assuming that they were probably booked solid, and they were. After explaining my situation to the office manager, she said let me see what we can do. She responded quickly, and even though they were booked solid, she went out of her way to make it happen. She had a crew here within the hour. Mason and his crew were both very professional, and personable. They got the job done quickly, and perfectly. I can honestly say after using them, 3 times now, that they are not only the best at what they do, but very professional, and accommodating. They go above and beyond. Their pricing is more than reasonable for the level of knowledge, and skill they possess. I also like that they are very focused on the health of the trees on your property, and don’t look to talk you into cutting trees down that don’t necessarily need to come down. Instead, in this situation, they suggested trimming the over hanging limbs, and canopy back, to make it safe with this storm coming. They could have easily said “it needs to come down”, and charged me quite a bit more. I would recommend Tree Awareness to anybody who needs tree work done professionally, and at a reasonable price. You can’t go wrong with them. I can’t express my appreciation for easing my concerns, on such short notice the way they did. Thanks guys. Keep up the great work guys.

Tree Awareness (Mason & the guys) did a remarkable job with getting my trees/bushes ready for spring. Mason spent all the time needed to discuss & explain different things about keeping everything in my yard growing beautifully. He is very knowledgeable & provides options for the various things that could be done to add to the landscape, but also keeps in mind what the customer’s preferences may be. From the owner of the company, Paul Beister, to the employees, you know you are getting top quality and honest service. MIA, who does all the work behind the scenes ensuring the smooth operation of the business, is very efficient and such a pleasure to work with! This is a very well run company. You can feel sure you are getting the best care for your yard - and Paul is always learning and keeping up with the newest research in order to provide the best service. You can rest assured you are working with an honest, caring family business! I highly recommend Tree Awareness without any reservations. I will remain a loyal customer! Thank you everyone!!

Coverage

Where we work, block by block.

We work the whole Tavistock footprint — the country-club grounds and adjacent residences. Good stewards of the local forest — that’s how we’ve framed this work for thirty years. Less invasive, more in harmony.

Tavistock Country Club grounds

We work this section the way we work the rest of town — careful assessment first, then the right call for the tree.

Tavistock Lane

Mature street trees on this stretch. We know the species, the soil, and the storm patterns from working these blocks for years.

Country Club entrance

We work this section the way we work the rest of town — careful assessment first, then the right call for the tree.

Adjacent fairway lots

Established avenue plantings. Annual eyes save real money against the cost of an emergency call.

Clubhouse plantings

Same standard here as everywhere else: understand the tree, keep what should stay, and when removal is the right call, do it well.

Boundary edge with Haddonfield

The edge between one ecology and another. Pruning here means knowing both sides of that line.

TAVISTOCK · Common questions

Common questions, specific answers.

Real questions from real property owners in Tavistock — about credentials, process, and the work we do.

What’s your NJ Tree Care License number?

NJ Licensed Tree Expert #408 — held by Paul D. Biester since 1993. Most NJ tree services display a single license number. We hold the credentials triad — NJ LTE #408 + TCIA Accreditation + CTSP — with explicit verification.

Do you offer cabling and bracing for older Tavistock trees?

Yes. Cabling and bracing extends the life of mature heritage trees. We use TRAQ-qualified risk assessment.

Are you BBB-Accredited?

Tree Awareness, Inc. is TCIA-Accredited — more rigorous than BBB for tree service specifically.

How long have you been working in this corner of Camden County?

Since 1993 — over 30 years. The differentiator is the credentials we hold and the owner-on-every-job model.

Do you handle specimen-tree care on the country-club course?

Yes. Course specimen trees are different from residential tree work — they're design assets that took decades to mature. We use TRAQ-qualified review, conservative pruning, cabling, root-collar excavation, and lightning protection before any consideration of removal. Removal is the last option, not the first.

Can you handle fairway-edge access without damaging the course?

Yes. We bring matting and ground-protection plates, plan drop zones away from greens and bunkers, and use rigging to lower sections rather than free-fall. Damage costs on a course are real and we plan around them.

How do you schedule major work around tournaments and member events?

Most major work is scheduled for winter dormancy (December through February) when course play is lightest. Emergency work happens any time but we coordinate timing with course management to minimize disruption to play.
