Diagnostic checklist

When a tree has to come down β€” and when it doesn’t.

Harrison Township is one of the older settled corners of Gloucester County. The Mullica family began buying land along Raccoon Creek in 1704, the village of Mullica Hill grew up along Main Street (Route 45), and its historic district — 136 contributing buildings on 68 acres — was listed on the National Register in 1991. The township itself was formed in 1844 and renamed a year later for President William Henry Harrison. That history means heritage shade trees on village lots, plus farmstead hedgerows and woodlots across nearly 19 square miles of open township. Six signs Paul looks for first.

01 · Diagnostic

Vertical cracks in the trunk

Splits running up or down the main trunk indicate structural failure has begun.

02 · Diagnostic

Bark peeling in large chunks

Healthy trees shed bark slowly. Large patches falling away in a single season point to internal decline.

03 · Diagnostic

Fungus growing on the trunk or root flare

Mushroom conks at the base or running up the trunk are evidence of structural decay.

04 · Diagnostic

Significant lean toward a structure

New leans, or worsening leans — especially after a storm — mean the root plate may be compromised.

05 · Diagnostic

Lightning damage or split crown

Lightning-struck trees often show crown dieback within 12–18 months.

06 · Diagnostic

EAB canopy thinning on ash trees

If your ash tree’s upper canopy is 30%+ thinned, the tree is past treatment threshold.

Why this township

Three Harrison Township moments — and why each one shapes how we work here.

Few Gloucester County towns carry this combination: a 1704 creek-side settlement, a township carved from farmland in 1844, and a National Register village core.

i.
1704

Mullica’s landing on Raccoon Creek

The sons of Swedish-Finnish settler Eric Mullica began buying land on Raccoon Creek in 1704, and the village that took their name grew up on both banks. The oldest trees in the township are farmstead and creek-edge specimens from that era of clearing and settlement — we treat them the way arborists treat heritage trees in any historic setting.

ii.
1844

A township named for a president

Harrison Township was set off from Greenwich and Woolwich townships on March 13, 1844 as Spicer Township, then renamed a year later for President William Henry Harrison. Most of its nearly 19 square miles is still farmland, orchard, and woodlot — so the work here is as much hedgerow oaks and windbreaks as it is village street trees.

iii.
1991

A National Register village

The Mullica Hill Historic District — 68 acres and 136 contributing buildings along Main, Church, High, Mill, New and Union streets — was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. Old Town Hall, the Friends Meetinghouse, and St. Stephen’s (1852) anchor it. It sets the bar for tree work: nothing happens on those blocks without consideration of the streetscape. Most jobs get written documentation for property files.

Local pressure

What Harrison Township Trees Actually Need

Three pressures specific to a township that is part historic village, part working farmland. Knowing which one applies determines whether the call is for treatment, pruning, or removal.

Village core

Heritage Canopy on Main Street

The old oaks, sycamores, and maples on Main Street and the side streets of the historic district grew up with the village. These are not routine residential trees. Crown reduction, structural pruning, and risk assessment here are preservation operations, with documentation for the property file.

Sept. 1, 2021

Tornado Recovery

The EF3 tornado that came through Mullica Hill during the remnants of Hurricane Ida on September 1, 2021 stripped whole blocks of canopy, with winds near 150 mph. Trees that survived on the edge of that track often carry hidden damage — twisted unions, cracked leaders, root plates that shifted. Those need a careful look before the next storm, not after it.

Modern pressure

EAB & Farm Edges

Emerald ash borer is established across Gloucester County. Untreated ash on Harrison Township lots typically fails within 3–5 years of first canopy thinning. Out on the farm side of the township, hedgerow and windbreak trees take equipment traffic over the root zone year after year — soil compaction is its own diagnostic frame there.

I first used Tree Awareness back in the 90’s to take out 2 overgrown trees at my property in West Deptford. Both very large, and very close to the house. I used them again about 10 years ago for the same reason at my current property. When we had a wet heavy snow a few weeks ago, a tree that hangs over my roof and still has dead leaves on it, was so weighed down it was touching the roof, and the tree itself was leaning pretty precariously Towards the house. When I saw today that we might be getting 11”-15” of heavy wet snow this weekend, I was in a panic. I called them, assuming that they were probably booked solid, and they were. After explaining my situation to the office manager, she said let me see what we can do. She responded quickly, and even though they were booked solid, she went out of her way to make it happen. She had a crew here within the hour. Mason and his crew were both very professional, and personable. They got the job done quickly, and perfectly. I can honestly say after using them, 3 times now, that they are not only the best at what they do, but very professional, and accommodating. They go above and beyond. Their pricing is more than reasonable for the level of knowledge, and skill they possess. I also like that they are very focused on the health of the trees on your property, and don’t look to talk you into cutting trees down that don’t necessarily need to come down. Instead, in this situation, they suggested trimming the over hanging limbs, and canopy back, to make it safe with this storm coming. They could have easily said β€œit needs to come down”, and charged me quite a bit more. I would recommend Tree Awareness to anybody who needs tree work done professionally, and at a reasonable price. You can’t go wrong with them. I can’t express my appreciation for easing my concerns, on such short notice the way they did. Thanks guys. Keep up the great work guys.

Great experience from the quote to finish! They removed a tree that was leaning against other trees that could have shattered my fence and gone in neighbors yard. They were friendly and did a first class job! Will definitely use them in the future!

Heritage canopy. We’d rather leave a tree standing for another generation than take it because someone’s nervous about a single limb.

Less invasive, more in harmony — that’s the work, whether it’s a single backyard or a whole block.

Same standard here as everywhere else: understand the tree, keep what should stay, and when removal is the right call, do it well.

We work this section the way we work the rest of town — careful assessment first, then the right call for the tree.

Harrison Township tree service · FAQ

Harrison Township Tree Service — What to Expect

Specific answers for township property owners, farm owners, and historic-district homeowners.

How much does tree removal cost in Harrison Township, NJ?

Cost is driven by trunk size, access (a tight Main Street lot with no truck access costs more than an open farm lot toward Richwood), proximity to historic structures, and whether stump grinding and haul-out are included. Every Harrison Township job gets a free written estimate before any work starts.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree on your property?

The Mullica Hill Historic District has been on the National Register since 1991, and the township takes its streetscape seriously. While many residential removals do not require a permit, properties inside the historic district or with farmland or conservation easements may face additional review. We help homeowners verify with the township before scheduling.

Do you work in the Harrison Township Historic District?

Regularly. The Main Street corridor and the surrounding blocks need preservation-grade work. We use rigging instead of felling, ANSI A300 cuts, and provide written documentation for property files and any township record-keeping.

Can you handle street-tree work on Main Street in Mullica Hill?

Yes. We coordinate with the township on access, drop-zone management, and any timing constraints that protect the heritage corridor. Insurance documentation provided for civic-property files.

Are you available for emergency tree service overnight?

Yes — 24/7 emergency response. After major storms we triage by hazard: trees on structures and trees blocking roads come first. Call (856) 241-0489 and we’ll dispatch the same day in most cases.

When should I prune oaks in Harrison Township?

Late dormancy (February–early March) is ideal. Avoid pruning oaks April through July to prevent oak wilt vector activity. Storm cleanup and dead-wooding can be done year-round.

Do you treat emerald ash borer in Harrison Township?

Yes. We diagnose canopy thinning, evaluate whether trunk-injection treatment is still viable based on canopy loss, and implement a treatment schedule when appropriate. For trees past treatment threshold, we recommend and schedule removal before structural failure.

Do you work farm properties and orchards outside the village?

Yes. Most of Harrison Township is still working farmland, and hedgerow oaks, windbreaks, and woodlot edges are a large part of what we do here. We work around planting and harvest schedules, bring matting for soft ground, and provide written documentation when an easement or insurer needs it.
