About this town

Woodbury Heights is a residential borough on the heights south of Woodbury.

Woodbury Heights borough was incorporated in 1915, separated from Deptford Township. The 1.1 sq mi borough sits on slightly elevated land south of the county seat (Woodbury). That elevation gives it different drainage than flatter neighbors, and the residential canopy carries mature 1920s+ subdivision plantings now hitting structural-failure age. The principles are simple: understand before acting, keep what should stay, and when a tree must come down, do it well. Less invasive, more in harmony.

Elevation borough

Elevation, drainage, and how that changes tree care here.

Elevation changes drainage. Drainage changes tree care.

Elevated north

Elm Avenue ridge

The northern blocks sit on the highest elevation in the borough. Faster drainage, drier upper soils in summer, more wind exposure in nor’easters.

Lower south

Boulevard area

The southern blocks sit lower than the elevated north. Different drainage and species mix.

Local pressure

Three Pressures on Woodbury Heights Trees

Elevation drainage + 1920s subdivision canopy + EAB.

01 · ELEVATION DRAINAGE

Faster runoff, drier upper soils

The borough’s elevated position changes drainage and drought stress. Tree species selection and supplemental watering matter more here.

02 · SUBDIVISION-ERA

1920s+ residential plantings reaching their limit

Most of Woodbury Heights’ canopy traces back to the borough’s 1915 incorporation and the 1920s residential boom.

03 · EAB

Established across the county

Field-edge ash here needs a treatment plan or removal timeline.

Diagnostic checklist

When a tree has to come down — and when it doesn’t.

Woodbury Heights split from Deptford Township in 1915 and grew as a streetcar suburb during the 1920s. Most of the residential canopy came in during that era — Elm Avenue plantings, oak-lined side streets, and the larger Pin Oaks of CR 553. A century on, those trees are reaching the end of their structural life. Six signs Paul looks for first.

01 · Diagnostic

Vertical cracks in the trunk

Splits running up or down the main trunk indicate structural failure has begun.

02 · Diagnostic

Bark peeling in large chunks

Healthy trees shed bark slowly. Large patches falling away in a single season point to internal decline.

03 · Diagnostic

Fungus growing on the trunk or root flare

Mushroom conks at the base or running up the trunk are evidence of structural decay.

04 · Diagnostic

Significant lean toward a structure

New leans, or worsening leans — especially after a storm — mean the root plate may be compromised.

05 · Diagnostic

Lightning damage or split crown

Lightning-struck trees often show crown dieback within 12–18 months.

06 · Diagnostic

EAB canopy thinning on ash trees

If your ash tree’s upper canopy is 30%+ thinned, the tree is past treatment threshold.

Tree Awareness (Mason & the guys) did a remarkable job with getting my trees/bushes ready for spring. Mason spent all the time needed to discuss & explain different things about keeping everything in my yard growing beautifully. He is very knowledgeable & provides options for the various things that could be done to add to the landscape, but also keeps in mind what the customer’s preferences may be. From the owner of the company, Paul Beister, to the employees, you know you are getting top quality and honest service. MIA, who does all the work behind the scenes ensuring the smooth operation of the business, is very efficient and such a pleasure to work with! This is a very well run company. You can feel sure you are getting the best care for your yard - and Paul is always learning and keeping up with the newest research in order to provide the best service. You can rest assured you are working with an honest, caring family business! I highly recommend Tree Awareness without any reservations. I will remain a loyal customer! Thank you everyone!!

Paul and Kevin are amazing. Paul came out right away and we walked the property to discuss what I wanted done. He took his time and really listened to what I was hoping to accomplish. He is very knowledgeable and understood what I wanted and made some great recommendations. I also really appreciated his honesty as he explained why some things that weren’t necessary or shouldn’t be done. He then offered other solutions which worked out great.. I appreciated his knowledge and understanding of my vision and what could be done to achieve it. The team has been out twice already to do the majority of the work and will be out one more time as there were quite a few trees that needed to come down and a lot of work on existing trees and bushes. They were prompt, courteous, and did a fabulous job of cleanup. Other than the trees that are gone, you wouldn’t know they were even here. That says something for their level of professionalism- I am looking forward to next year and the next phase of work on the property. Working with Kevin in the office has been great and Watching Paul and his team work has been nothing short of outstanding.
